Just like one executor or an authorized representative, a liquidator is responsible for the settlement of a legacy. The liquidator is responsible, among other things, for drawing up the inventory, paying creditors and paying out inheritance shares to all heirs. If no executor has been appointed in a will and one or more heirs have beneficiarily accepted the estate, the heirs are joint liquidators and are jointly responsible for the settlement of the estate.

- not all heirs are known or respond;
- all heirs have rejected;
- the estate is not administered by an executor.
